Our Heavy Duty Log Lap Rectangular Wooden Garden Planter is designed for customers who want more than just a basic planter — it’s built for strength, longevity, and premium garden styling. Handmade in Leek, Staffordshire using high-quality Scandinavian redwood, this substantial trough planter combines traditional craftsmanship with commercial-grade durability to create a feature that looks exceptional in any outdoor space.

Unlike many lightweight or thin-panel planters on the market, ours is constructed using thick 20mm log lap cladding fixed to a strong internal framework, giving it outstanding rigidity and structural strength. Finished with a decorative  top lip frame, the result is a robust, heavy-duty planter weighing approximately large – 17kg, extra large – 25kg & extra large plus – 30kg, a true indication of quality materials and solid construction.

Many cheaper alternatives use thin timber, softwood panels, or lightweight framing that can twist, bow, or deteriorate after only a few seasons outdoors. Our planter is different. We use premium Scandinavian redwood, widely regarded as one of the best timbers for outdoor furniture and garden products due to its slower growth, tighter grain, and superior durability.

The timber is pressure treated (also known as tanalised), a process where preservative treatment is forced deep into the wood under high pressure. This protects the timber from rot, fungal decay, insect attack, and moisture damage from the inside out — not just on the surface. Unlike dip-treated products that require constant retreatment, pressure-treated timber provides long-term protection designed to withstand the British climate year after year.

Because of this treatment process, our planter is highly resistant to weathering and can last for up to 20 years with minimal maintenance required. You can leave it natural and allow it to age gracefully, or stain and paint it to suit your garden style.

No need to stain or treat, however if you wish to enrich or change the colour this can be done with a water based stain or outdoor timber paint. Oil based preservatives can also be used to nourish the wood and increase the durability, see below.

To keep your Simply Wood products looking new, protected and fresh we have the stain used in manufacturing available to purchase:-

Please note the drainage slats on the base of the planter to prevent rot. A liner or membrane can be used if required however not essential. You could also recycle the cardboard packaging supplied to support the growing media/compost (remembering to create drainage holes) Alternatively place some rocks/old pot pieces in the base of the planter. This will assist with drainage and prevent plant root rot.
